Barn Frame Displays Toys And Photo
A creative way to display toy tractor collections recently caught our attention. Arlen Byard of St. Paul, Ind., builds 8-in. deep display barns that hang on the wall like a picture. His barns include space for a large photo and several small toys.
“My neighbor bought a photo at a tractor show of an International tractor and asked me to build a frame,” Byard explains. “I decided to make a picture frame that looked like a barn.”
As a toy collector himself (more than 500 pieces), Byard added shelves for toys.
At 54 by 36-in., there’s plenty of room for a good size photo (18 by 20-in.) and several 1/16-scale toys. Byard used poplar for the frame and finished the floor with cedar. Even the metal roof was made to scale by creating ridges 3 in. apart with a roller attachment on an electric drill.
“I’ve since made one with wood shingles, but most are metal. I can get metal to match every tractor color,” Byard says.
Prices vary according to complexity, he says. As an example, one barn picture frame sold for $400.
