Power Boost Kit For Diesel Pickupos
"It gives you the acceleration and pulling power of a gas engine without giving up the longevity, economy and reliability of a diesel," says Larry Denman about the add-on power booster kit his company makes for diesel pickups.
"Power Plus" kits provide the performance of turbo charging without the expense or maintenance headaches, Denman adds.
The system consists of new exhaust manifold adapters, a free-flowing muffler, a new air cleaner top plate, a bigger snorkel for the air cleaner housing, and a new air management insert. Designed primarily to eliminate backpressure, the components simply bolt onto the engine and require no internal modifications. (A minor readjustment of the injector pump is sometimes necessary).
The system provides the engine with about 60% more air. In one test on a GMC 6.2L diesel, the modification increased rear-wheel horsepower by 19.9 percent, hill-climbing speed 16.3 percent, and 0 to 60 mph acceleration 22.48 percent.
Kits are available for 6.9/7.3L Ford, 6.2L GM, and Dodge diesels from 1989 to present.
Kits for GMC and Ford sell for $695 (aluminized steel parts) or $995 (stainless steel). Full stainless steel kit for Dodge pickups 1989-93 sells for $995; exhaust system only $695. A recently released kit for 1994-96 Dodge pickups sells for an introductory price $495.
