How To Plant Cover Crops, Small Grains With Corn Planter
SeedRight seed plates let you accurately seed cover crops and small grains with row crop planters. The seed plates from Davaus retrofit popular Deere, Kinze and Precision Planting planter units for planting small or large seed cover crops.
“Our planter plates let you use your planter to plant small grains and cover crops with more control over depth and population,” says Dave Hockemeyer, Davaus. “SeedRight plates replace your current seed discs with little or no adjustment on leading vacuum planters and brush meter planters.”
SeedRight plates with cells sized for either larger or smaller sized seeds are available for Deere vacuum planters and Kinze EdgeVac vacuum planters. Larger size seeds are defined as fewer than 35,000 seeds per lb. This includes wheat, cereal rye, triticale and oats.
Smaller size seeds are defined as more than 35,000 seeds per lb. and include radish, turnips and clovers.
The large cell disc will also plant various cover crop mixes containing various seed sizes.
“If farmers are unsure whether their seed mix would work with one of our plates, we encourage them to send in a sample for testing,” says Hockemeyer. “We are constantly looking to expand our list of endorsed seeds.”
A SeedRight BackerPlate works with OEM plates in Kinze Brush-Type mechanical planters to accurately plant small grains and cover crops. SeedRight also makes a seed plate for use with Precision Planting Meters to plant larger sized cover crop mixes and small grains.
The concept was developed by an Ohio farmer who came to Hockemeyer’s prototype and manufacturing company Peridot. After supplying him with parts for several years, Hockemeyer acquired the business and has reintroduced it under the new agricultural equipment company Davaus. Davaus also recently purchased the prototype Bi-Rotor combine with plans to develop that technology.
“We have been a service company producing parts for other companies for 20 years,” says Hockemeyer. “SeedRight is our first set of proprietary products.”
SeedRight plates for Kinze and Deere vacuum planters are priced at $42 each. BackerPlates for Kinze Brush-Type mechanical planters are priced at $31 each. The large cell seed plate for Precision Planting Meters is priced at $39 each. All plates are available direct from SeedRight or through a growing network of OEM dealers including Deere, Kinze and Precision Planting.
