Bottom Up Chimney Cleaner
Now you can clean creosote buildup out of chimneys and stove pipes without having to climb up on the roof, thanks to "Bottom Up," a disc or rectangle made of rigid, yet flexible 3/16 in. thick plastic and attached to a flexible plastic rod that can turn corners.
Robert Brooks, owner of Brookwood Systems, the company distributing the new product, says that, before agreeing to market the Flex Klean chimney cleaner system, he tested it on 150 to 200 chimneys. "We didn't find one it wouldn't work on," he reports.
Many different size discs ù including 5 in. up to 12 in. round and 6 by 6 in. to 12 by 16 in. square or rectangular are available. The proper disc for a chimney is determined by the chimney's shape and size inside.
Brooks says the Flex Klean system also will work in round, metal stovepipe chimney systems on wood-burning stoves. Pipe for stoves often is routed up through the roof of the house by using insulated pipe. The pipe system sections need to be joined by metal screws to make them sturdy, explains Brooks, because the Flex Klean system does exert some pressure on the pipe.
There are slits in the discs so that small pieces of creosote can fall down through during cleaning. Larger pieces come back down and out as the cleaner is withdrawn from the chimney.
A chimney can be cleaned in 10 minutes, it is claimed. Straight flues, or flues that bend and turn, can be cleaned with the device.
Cost of the Flex Klean, including 30 ft. of rod and an 8 by 8 in. square cleaning piece, is $40.25, plus shipping.
