"Kids can't open them up like they can conventional plug-in type outlet covers," says Wallace Weiger, manufacturer of new outlet covers with spring-loaded slides that block the receptacle holes when they're not being used.The covers completely replace existing outlet plates. To open you just insert the prongs and push slightly inward and to the right.
In addition to being child-resistant, the cover is energy efficient, plugging one of the biggest energy drains in the house. They sell for $3.00 apiece and are also available at Ace Hardware stores.
