Slick Way To Pull Fence Posts FENCING Techniques 23-1-7 "I always carry a tire rim and chain in my pickup. I can use them to pull out any wood or steel post with ease. It beats having to get the tractor out," says Tom Trenary, Corinth, Ky.
He simply wraps the end of a piece of chain around the post and runs it over the top of a 15-in. auto rim. He rolls the rim right up next to the post and sets a 2 by 4 wood block right behind the rim. Then he pulls back on the chain to pull the post straight up out of the ground.
If it's a small post, you can pull it by hand. But if it's a big one, he just hooks the chain to the back of his 4-WD pickup.
