"Until now, the only way to get a ceramic-type coating was to buy pre-mixed coatings, which are often prohibitively expensive. This powder can simply be mixed into any kind of paint," says Rayburn.
The fine white ceramic powder was developed by NASA for the space shuttle to dissipate heat upon re-entry. It consists of ceramic hollow micro speres that reflect and dissipate heat. When mixed in with paint and applied to metal roofs, walls or other surfaces, it reduces the transfer of heat from inside or out.
Rayburn says the product is perfect for use on farm metal buildings. Energy savings with commerical ceramic pre-mixes on commercial buildings have been as high as 40%. Rayburn expects similar results with the new mix-in powder. You can add it to any paint but white or light colored paints work best.
"Ceramic coatings are fantastic for metal roofs which can transfer up to 95 percent of the solar heat directly to the interior. This product is also great for mixing into elastic coatings designed for roofs. Mixing it into them will lower interior temperatures 15 to 20 degrees. Coating the underside of the roof and surrounding supports lowers temperatures even more."
One 32-oz. bag of "Heatshield" powder is needed per gallon of paint. It sells for $8.00 plus $4 S&H. A 5-gal. kit, consisting of five 32-oz. bags, sells for $40 plus $4 S&H. There's a 10% discount if you order more than 5 kits at a time.
