Outdoor Furnace Burns Big Bales

Heatmor, Inc. has been building outdoor furnaces for years. Its latest model is attracting the most attention even from farmers because it's big enough to burn big round bales. It's made from 7 gauge titanium stabilized stainless steel. The firebox is 72 in. high, 54 in. deep, and 60 in wide. The door opening is 50 by 56 in. It can be used for either forced air or hot water heating, and comes with a 487-gal. boiler that's rated to heat up to 20,000 sq. ft.
Jerry Huinink, Huinink Farms, Woodstock, Ontario, says they bought one as soon as it was available. "We're using it to heat our house and also a 100-sow farrow-to-finish barn plus the office and workshop," he says. He also pipes hot water from the stove to radiators in front of his grain bin aeration fans to help dry grain.
Huinink has burned both wood and baled cornstalks in his furnace. "Most of the wood we get is free. Once people heard we could handle 3-ft. trunks, people who have no use for them started dropping them off."
The manufacturer says the large furnace door makes the new furnace ideal for burning a number of scrap or waste fuels, including pallets, sawmill scraps, and timber industry waste. Suggested retail price is $16,900.
