No-Slip Mower Fitted With ATV Tires ATV'S 30-3-2 Slipping and sliding on his hillside lawn was a problem for Maynard Mitchell until he put ATV tires on his 50-in. Murray riding mower. "It was too low and kept getting hung up," explains Mitchell. "I mow about three acres of pretty steep hillside and rough ground. I have a lot of rocks and a lot of trees." Mitchell's son Mike runs an ATV dealership. He suggested putting ATV tires on the mower wheels. "ATV's have so many more options in tires than lawn mowers. You can get anything from nearly flat tread up to tractor-type tread. Plus you can get a 4 or 6-ply ATV tire for about the same as a 2-ply lawn mower tire," says Mike. "I put knobby pattern tires on the front of my dad's mower and went from 24 to 25-in. tires on back. Now he can turn and climb where he couldn't with mower tires and the extra inch of height reduced scalping." Mitchell has since put ATV tires on two more mowers. Mike advises others considering the change to keep a couple of things in mind. "If the rim size is 8 in., then stick with an 8-in. tire," he says. "Also, stay with the same brand. Even though two tires are both 25 8x12's, they may have different actual height and tread width due to different air pressures or composition."
