"Grabber" Pulls Brush By The Roots
"It pulls the entire root system out without leaving any stumps or roots to grow back or get in the way of tillage equipment," says Paul Downing, BAC Industries, Inc., Hopkins, Minn.
The Brush Grubber consists of a pair of 360 degree-rotating "grip pads", with eight spikes on each pad. The pads attach to spring-loaded, scissors-type jaws that tightly grip the trunk when pulled backward.
"The harder you pull, the harder the spikes grip. A spring keeps the pads tight against the trunk, even when no back pressure is applied. The jaws open wide enough to grip a 3-in. dia. trunk," says Downing.
One model attaches to a chain and sells for $59.99. Another one clamps to the front edge of a loader bucket. The operator pulls on a rope to open the jaws. It sells for $269.99. A hand-powered version for post pulling and smaller brush (up to 2-in. dia.) is available for $99.99. A lever applies pressure to a stand on the ground. Several other configurations are available, all using the same basic concept.
