New deep tillage tool from Germany has curved shanks that loosen soil without disturbing residue, says Worksaver, Inc., Litchfield, Ill., which recently obtained exclusive licensing rights to manufacture the unit in North America.
The "Terra Max" fractures soil down to 12 to 15 in. deep without leaving large clods or slabs on the surface. Shanks are made from forged spring steel and have replace-able angled points that lift soil 3 to 5 in. Models are available with either one or two opposing shanks per row.
"It's a very low-maintenance tillage tool," says spokesman Elmo Sergent. "Shanks are made from extremely hard steel that allows them to be narrow and sharply curved. The curve provides the lift power and eliminates the need for wing plates to fracture soil. The narrow slot it makes disturbs less topsoil so it's ideal for no-till. Shanks on other deep till units wear out faster so they have a hardened-steel wear strip on front and bolt-on shims on the bottom. The forged spring steel is so much harder than conventional steel that shims and wear strips aren't needed.
"The single shank model shatters an area 12 to 15 in. wide and requires 25 to35 hp per row. Our double shank model shatters a 30-in. wide area and requires about 10 more horsepower per row. Double shanks lift and shatter soil from both directions. One shank mounts slightly ahead of the other shank. The front shank lifts and shatters in one direction and the rear shank lifts and shatters in the opposite direction."
The heavy duty frame has high ground clearance to prevent trash build-up. Automatic reset shanks for rocky soils are avail-able.
An optional roller conditioner with staggered, angled paddles helps level the soil and incorporate residue into the ground. Optional gauge wheels provide depth control under varying field conditions and are spring assisted so one person can easily adjust gauge wheel height. Also optional are spring-loaded 20-in. dia. coulters that provide up to 600 lbs. of down pressure to cut through trash.
Models are available with 2 to 6 rows of shanks on 30-in. spacings (row spacings are adjustable). A 4-row single shank model sells for $6,755 and a 4-row double shank model sells for $9,145.
