Buy Used Parts For Half Price
One way to cut costs might be to buy used parts to fix your older tractors. They're readily available from a variety of suppliers and the going rate is about half of what you'd have to pay for new replacement parts. For example, there's the Joe Goodman Tractor Parts Co., Lincoln, Neb., which claims to have "virtually the largest stock of used, rebuilt and new tractor parts anywhere in the world."
"We're the only major parts company that publishes a parts catalog exclusively for farm tractors," explains Andrew Goodman, president.
The company's current catalog lists more that 5,000 used parts for tractors, going way back to Farmall F-12's, McCormick Deering, Sheppard, Cockshutt and John Deere A's, B's and D's. In addition to used parts, it lists a variety of accessories and assemblies, such as rebore kits, sleeve assemblies, rebuilt and rebored block assemblies, reground crankshafts with new bearings, power steer units, rebuilt cylinder heads, rebuilt starters and generators, rebuilt radiators, used wheel rims, tires, magnetos, carburetors and more.
"If we don't have a part in stock, we will try and locate it with no obligation," explains Goodman. "Our weekly bulletin goes out each Friday to all major tractor parts warehouses in the U.S. When the item is located, we advise the farmer as to availability and price."
Here's what the "Goodman Guarantee" on used parts, including "located" parts covers:
"All of our used parts are carefully cleaned, checked, and guaranteed to be free of cracks, repairs or other major defects. They're suitable and serviceable in every respect, and guaranteed for 30 days. All rebuilt parts are guaranteed for 90 days. New parts are guaranteed to be equal to or better than the original manufacturer's in quality and workmanship. New parts are not original but are of our own manufacture and are guaranteed for 90 days."
Where to the used tractor parts come from?
"Within a one year period, we dismantle several hundred used tractors. We have thousands upon thousands of parts which we don't have room to list in our catalog," explains Goodman.
