Soil-Hardening Product Catches On Fast For Farm, Ranch Use
An amazing product that has been used for nearly 40 years across the U.S. and Canada to stabilize soils and harden gravel roads is catching on fast with farmers and ranchers for feedlots, farmyards, field roads, farm ponds, and much more.
Perma-Zyme is an all-natural fermented solution of molasses mixed with feed grains. It binds with a wide range of soil mixes to create a solid foundation that’s virtually impervious to water and frost heave, at a fraction of the cost of conventional concrete or asphalt paving. It’s completely non-toxic and biodegradable.
When mixed with water (at a 1:500 ratio), applied to loose soil, and then compacted, Perma-zyme bonds with clay particles in the soil, creating a hard slate-type foundation.
It works best in soils with 20 percent clay “fines” but has produced excellent results with a minimum of 8 percent clay, says Bob Mayo, General Manager at I.E.C. Distributing, the company that distributes Perma-Zyme across North America for the manufactuer, International Enzymes in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Once the product is applied, and the final compaction and grading are complete, it takes about 72 hrs. for the surface to harden. It can be used during the time that it’s curing. A road 25 ft. wide can be treated to a depth of 6 in. with 15 gal. of Perma-Zyme.
Mayo and Bob Johnson, both partners in I.E.C. Distributing, used Perma-Zyme for nearly 20 years in their road construction and maintenance careers. The two men work closely with customers to determine soil type and the ideal mix of Perma-Zyme needed to create solid foundations. Additional clay or aggregates can be added to surfaces, depending on soil composition and the intended use.
“After years of use in soil stabilization and road construction, we’re just beginning to discover all the possibilities for farm and ranch use,” says Bob Johnson, Senior Road Advisor. “If you’ve got mud problems on your driveway, field roads, or around your farmyard, we can help. And we’ve had great success fixing moisture problems under silage piles or around cattle yards by creating a surface that’s resistant to moisture.”
