Company Remanufactures Hydros With Care
Hydrostatic transmission remans can save a lot of money, but they’re not usually do-it-yourself projects, says Cara Herrs of Herrs Machine. The company has been rebuilding hydrostatic transmissions since 1969. They out grew their original home-based business and built a larger new building in 1988 to accommodate the growth.
“Our most common repairs are IH tractor hydros, as well as combine hydros” says Herrs. “We have ag backgrounds, so we understand how quickly equipment needs to be up and running. In addition to our rebuild service, we keep a large inventory of parts, pumps, motors and exchange tractor hydros. We can usually ship out the same day that we get an order. We ship nationwide, including Canada.”
Herrs suggests making a toll-free call for a cost estimate or technical support. To speed up the process; she recommends that customers have the model numbers and ID numbers off the unit before calling. A customer can send in their hydro parts to be inspected and reconditioned to factory specs.
The company works with tractors, combines, skid steers and a wide range of other equipment. However, long term specialties have been IH tractor hydros. These were really long life transmissions and a lot of them had over 10,000 hours of use when they came in the shop. Cara’s husband, Lawrence had worked with an IH dealer when tractor hydros came out in 1967, so many years of experience came into their business.
When parts come in for a rebuild, they are first visually inspected and measured using a micrometer. If parts pass inspection, they are machine lapped to within 1 millionth of an inch of perfect flatness. The tolerances are the same as factory specifications.
Once the unit has been remanned; it is thoroughly tested on the test stands under full load. Each step in the process is recorded. The Servo, Charge, and Drive pressures are set on the test stand. When the customers receive their unit, it is ready to be installed on their machine. Units are warrantied.
This was our best year for tractor hydros in 46 years of business. We have a lot of new customers!
