See-Through Chicken Coop Door
To protect his small flock of Barred Rock/Plymouth Rock chickens at night, Sandro Hollenstein of Fair Oaks, California, purchased a battery-powered door closing system and built his own transparent door.
Sandro purchased his timer system from a company in the UK called ChickenGuard (www.chickenguard.com; about $199). The closer can be programmed to close and open at a certain time each day. The battery-powered system is sealed with silicon to make it weather resistant.
“I used plexiglass for the door so I can peek in when it’s closed, but wood will do the job as well,” said Sandro. The tracks on the side to guide the plexiglass door up and down are made of wood. A cord that attaches to the door pulls it up and lets it down. The chicken coop door is about 12 1/2 by 15 in.”
