Modified Mower Blades Stopped Plug-ups
“The bagger on my Deere D105 mower never worked well. It was always plugging up and just a total pain,” says Doug Johnson, Aberdeen, Wash., noting that his bagger does not have vacuum assist.
“Then one day I was looking through Vol. III of FARM SHOW’s ‘Made It Myself Encyclopedia’ and spotted an article telling how one of your readers modified his mower blades to solve exactly the problem I was experiencing. I decided to give it a try.
“I used a piece of 1/4-in. key stock from Tractor Supply Company and welded it to the top side of the trailing edge opposite the cutting edge of the blade. I welded along the back side of the key, leaving the front edge blunt.
“It creates additional turbulence that keeps the grass flowing. Since I made this modification, I haven’t had a single plug-up, even in fairly wet grass. It exceeded my expectations.”
