Giant Security Gate Keeps Unwanted Visitors Out
“I thought FARM SHOW readers might be interested in the 11-ft. tall by 15-ft. wide wooden security gate I built across the alley behind my Sacramento, Calif., dental office. It definitely keeps vagrants off my property,” says Walter Winfrey, D.D.S., Auburn, Calif.
Winfrey lives on an acreage in rural Auburn, Calif., where he has a dental office. But 2 days a week he also works in a densely populated area of Sacramento, Calif.
He built the gate from redwood 1 by 6’s, with double-stacked 2 by 4’s around the perimeter. The 1 by 6’s are screwed into vertical, horizontal and angled 2 by 4’s. Triangulation provides sag-resistant strength.
The gate is hinged to a tall 4 by 6 wooden post, with the upper part of the post attached in 4 places to the house’s 16-in.-on-center wall studs. Ledger lock self-tapping, 4-in. screws secure the hinges.
In the closed position, the end of the 15-ft. wide gate achieves sag resistance with 2 horizontal 2 by 4’s attached to vertical 2 by 4 perimeter boards. Those boards rest on 2 by 4’s, which are vertically attached to a 4 by 4 post on his property line.
In the open position, the end of the gate is wired to a T-post via a short 2 by 4 screwed horizontally onto the gate.
“The only visible outside hardware on the gate is the padlock I use to secure a built-in, 3 by 6-ft. walk-through gate,” says Winfrey. “It allows me to walk in and out of my back yard without having to open the entire gate. Slide bolts on the inside part of the gate, which faces my back yard, keep both gates from being opened by the wind or vagrants.”
Winfrey came up with the idea because he had problems with vagrants climbing over a low border fence, crossing the alley, and camping in tents in my office back yard. “No one has camped in my back yard since I installed the gate,” says Winfrey. “It’s wide enough for my full-size trucks to pass through, and high enough to keep anyone from climbing over it. It could be used anywhere you ned an intimidating gate to keep people out.”
