Trailer-Mounted, Boomless ATV Sprayer
Brian Dickinson uses his 4-wheeler to pull a home-built, trailer-mounted “boomless” sprayer that rides on a pair of car wheels and covers a 20-ft. wide pattern. It’s operated by a 12-volt, 3 gpm pump that runs off the 4-wheeler’s battery.
“With no boom I can go just about anywhere with this sprayer. The trailer’s wheels follow the wheel tracks on the 4-wheeler,” says Dickinson. “I checked out some pull-type ATV sprayers on the market, but they all had small tires that would bounce around a lot. Riding on car tires, the trailer has about 10 in. of clearance so it can clear just about any obstacle without hanging up on rough ground.”
Dickinson says he had been using a tank sprayer mounted on the 4-wheeler, but “it made the machine top heavy and chemicals were splashing all over the place. I couldn’t easily remove a full tank from the 4-wheeler like I can with the trailer. Also, the boomless nozzle produces droplets instead of a mist that results in less spray drift. It’s located 45 in. off the ground so I can spray right over tall weeds and shrubs.”
He wanted to be able to spot spray around flowerbeds, so he added a 50-ft. hose with a handheld wand off an old pressure washer. “All I did was change the tip,” says Dickinson.
The tank rests in a homemade wooden saddle with 2-in. high metal sides, on which Dickinson mounted a 25-gal. tank on front and the electric pump on back. He welded a 3-ft. tall, 1/2-in. dia. pipe on back of the frame and welded a fitting on top of it, then screwed a flat boomless spray nozzle upside down into the fitting. A hose runs from the back of the tank up to the nozzle.
The sprayer is equipped with 3 valves – one for the boom, one for the handheld wand, and one to recirculate the tank’s content.
“With a 50-gal. nurse tank and my 25-gal. spray tank, I can cover 7 1/2 acres per hour on an open field,” says Dickinson. “And with no boom I’m able to spray 8 ft. on the other side of a fence, which provides total weed control on both sides of the fence. By keeping the tank on a trailer instead of on my 4-wheeler, I don’t have to empty it every time I’m done using it,” he notes.
A removable 4 1/2-ft. wide hooded boom can be attached on back of the sprayer, can be attached for certain jobs.
