Bird Feeder Cage Outsmarts Crows
✖ |
“After several tries I finally came up with a way to keep ravens and crows from stealing birdseed out of our backyard feeder,” says Killarney, Ireland handyman John Fuller. “To make it I used pieces of heavy gauge wire mesh, the kind used in portable dog kennels or to make scrap material baskets. I cut the mesh into 2-ft. sq. pieces, then zip-tied them together in a box shape, and then attached the box to the pole holding our feeder.”
Fuller says song birds can easily fly through the 1-in. holes to reach the feed, but crows, ravens and squirrels are kept out. “Squirrels will crawl completely around the metal box and try to reach in, but they’re out of luck and eventually go away,” Fuller says. “Crows and ravens are extremely smart, so after a few of them realized they couldn’t reach the seed, they would sit on top of the cage and flap their wings violently so the feeder would swing side to side, dropping a small amount of seed onto the ground. I’m fine with that, because they put on quite an entertaining show.”
