Heating Water Now A Tankless Job FARM HOME Miscellaneous 5-5-26 Energy savings "up to 60%" on your hot water heating bills are claimed for a new "tankless" hot water heater imported by a Vermont company.
Controlled Energy Corp., of Waitsfield, has introduced the French-made Saunier Duval water heater in North America for household, recreational and agricultural use. It's an "instantaneous" water heater which requires no heat-robbing tank to store hot water for eventual use.
"The Saunier Duval heater kicks in whenever a hot water tap is opened. It instantly heats the water to as high as 145?F with a gas burner," explains Pierre Moffroid, president of Con-trolled Energy. "When a hot water tap is opened, a flow-sensing diaphragm trips a switch to light the gas jets and heat the water instantly. Since no hot water is stored, there is no continuous energy drain, as with a tank-type heater."
Either natural gas or propane can be used to fire the heater. Four models are available to supply from 30,000 to 96,000 btu's. The heaters use a burner bar with from 6 to 18 gas jets to heat the water.
The Controlled Energy Corp. offers several models, from a small unit suitable for a camper or RV to a large model designed for very large household needs. Several of the larger models will also adapt to agricultural use, or two of the smaller units can be teamed in-line to supply hot water in dairy barns and for other farm needs.
Mike Brown, a distributor for Moffroid in Burnside, Pa., say's energy savings have ranged from 24 to 60% in tests his company, Action Energy Products, has run. Brown explains, "As an example, I used to have a 40-gal. electric tank heater that was costing me $40 a month to operate for my family of seven. Now, with a Saunier Duval tankless heater, it costs just $20 a month."
Tankless water heaters also save a lot of space since there is no tank, Brown notes. For example, the largest model is only 33 in. high, 18 in. wide and 10.5 in. deep. The four Saunier-Duval tankless heater models retail from $189 to about $480.
