Dalrymple Farms Provides Seed For
✖ |
In the early 1940’s, Elmer Dalrymple, a Thomas, Okla., resident discovered the benefits of using common crabgrass as a forage for livestock. Elmer noticed that when he tilled the land and planted Sudangrass or Redtop Cane, that it wasn’t long before crabgrass would take over and the majority of the pasture would soon become common crabgrass.
Elmer also noticed that the crab grass seemed to be more heat and drought tolerant and was high-quality forage with high palatability. Elmer gave up on planting the Sudan and Redtop and let his pastures come to volunteer crabgrass for grazing.
In the 1970’s, R.L. Dalrymple, the son of Elmer, took his dad’s experiences and knowledge of crabgrass and began his own research. After testing Elmer’s Crabgrass pastures and various other stands, a superior crabgrass was found. That crabgrass was much more productive with a longer growing season and would come to be known as “Red River” Crabgrass.
From 1972 to 1988 “Red River” Crabgrass was researched and studied at the Noble Foundation and in 1988 “Red River” Crabgrass was released as a Certified Seed by the Oklahoma Crop Improvement Association. The name “Red River” was given to the variety because the original mother plant originated from the sandy hills north of the Red River in south central Oklahoma. “Red River” Crabgrass wasn’t released as a Plant Protected Variety or Trademarked Variety. Over the years, common seed not from the original foundation have been sold and labeled as “Red River”. By not being protected or trademarked, the variety was contaminated in the seed trade. Due to the contamination problem, Dalrymple Farm re-released a very pure source of “Red River” Crabgrass. The grass was renamed “Dal’s Big River”TM Crabgrass. “Dal’s Big River” Crabgrass is a Certified Seed as above and a Trademarked Protected Variety.
“Red River” and “Dal’s Big River” Crabgrasses are bunch grasses and runner types of grasses. In ample space with good soil and moisture, the runners can spread over 6 ft. side-to-side and stems can grow up to 3 ft. tall, all from only one small seed. Crabgrass is also a high-moisture lush grass with a long growing season and can produce up to and over 10,000 lbs. per acre in dry weight. Under upper level management, all crabgrass has a fine stem which makes for good grazing and hay suitable for cattle, horses, sheep and goats.
Since the release of “Red River” Crabgrass in 1988, Dalrymple Farm varieties have grown to four. As of 2022, Dalrymple Farm has four varieties of big forage crabgrass seed. All four varieties are approved as Certified Class Seed by the Oklahoma Crop Improvement Association, with all varieties being Tradmarked or Plant Variety Protected (PVP). All varieties have the ability to produce up to and over 10,000 lbs. per acre, dry weight.
“Dal’s Big River”TM Crabgrass was released in 2017 as a Certified Seed and Trademarked Variety. “Dal’s Big River” Crabgrass is a full season tall runner (stolon) type of crabgrass. If space is available, runners can spread over 6 ft. side-to-side. “Dal’s Big River” Crabgrass is a tall grass with the capability of standing 2 to 3 ft. tall.
“Quick-N-Big”TM Crabgrass was released in 2010, as a Certified Seed and Trademarked Variety. This variety grows very erect, similar to wheat or rye and tillers profusely. It has a faster germination and much faster initial growth production than “Dal’s Big River” Crabgrass. “Quick-N-Big” Crabgrass has been measured up to 62 in. tall. This grass should be grazed when it is about 12 to 24 in. tall and hayed when it reaches 24 to 36 in. and is in the boot to early head stage.
“Quick-N-Big Spreader”TM Crabgrass was released in 2016, as a Certified Seed and Trademarked Variety. This grass is an extension of the original “Quick-N-Big” Crabgrass, with the height and production very similar. “Quick-N-Big Spreader” Crabgrass has decumbent (squatting) stems around the crown which makes this variety more tolerant to heavier grazing and haying. The decumbent nature helps protect it from grazing or haying too short and treading in the mud, etc.
“Quick-N-Big Spreader 19” (PVP) Crabgrass was released in 2022, and is also a Certified Seed and Plant Variety Protected (PVP) Variety. This variety came about with the continued research for the best decumbent spreading type of crabgrasses. It was the very best of 35 potential plants selected from over 90,000 original plants. This grass is an early growth grass, with more decumbent spread potential, at the base. Total production and early germination and growth is similar to both “Quick-N-Big” and “Quick-N-Big Spreader” Crabgrasses.
All four varieties are big, full season, high-quality, high-palatability, and upper level production forages. Each of the Dalrymple Farm crabgrasses are good for summer forage, i.e., grazing, haying, green chop, grass silage (wrapped), summer mixtures, double cropping with annual winter forage crops. It is also an excellent cover crop. The Dalrymple Farm crabgrasses can be used for winter stockpiling and with numerous soil conservation mixtures.
Dalrymple Farm Crabgrass seed is available from Dalrymple Farm as Certified Seed, Trademarked or Plant Variety Protected (PVP) seed to warrant purity of genetic background.
