Walk Behind Binder Built For Small Fields
Readers with small grain fields or other crops will soon be able to cut and bind them with the 622 Reaper/Binder from BCS. A new version will be available for the first time in North America in early 2023.
“We’ve had quite a few inquiries over the past 5 years from growers across the U.S. and Canada,” says Charlotte Maitland, BCS America. “The 622 was where BCS got its start. It was introduced in the 1940’s as the 242, the first engine-driven mower in the world. Later, the binding mechanism was added. It’s been in its current style for the past 15 to 20 years.”
The 622 has a working width of 55 in. and weighs just over 1,000 lbs. when equipped with the sulky seat. It’s used to cut and bind small grains, rice, sesame, lavender, reeds and more from 14 to 63 in. in height. The design allows crops well over 30 in. tall to flow under the deck, with sheaves tied off at a height of 11 in. The diameter of the sheaf can be adjusted.
While the 622 is a dedicated cutting and binding unit, BCS America is best known for the full line of walk-behind two-wheel tractors and implements they import and distribute across North America. Just like the 622, BCS America’s two-wheel tractor models are designed and built in Abbiategrasso, Italy, just outside of Milan. There are currently 12 tractor models offered, from the 7-hp. Model 710, up to the new 13-hp. Hydrostatic Model 779.
BCS America sources a full range of PTO-driven implements for the tractors as well. Most are built in Italy, but some are sourced from the UK, Canada, and even here in the US, like their extremely popular Compost Spreader which is built in Pennsylvania. “Two-wheel tractor manufacturers are much more prevalent in Europe, and manufacturers of implements for two-wheel tractors even more so. When there is demand for a particular implement scaled down to fit our tractors, we find the best company making it and start a conversation,” says Maitland.
That strategy has worked well for BCS America to expand the versatility of their tractors as they offer over 60 different attachments of various sizes. That includes six different types of mowing attachments, four for snow clearing, a wide range of property maintenance tools like pressure washers, dump carts and chipper/shredders, and, of course, a full range of soil-working implements. “Most people have heard of a BCS Tiller, but they may not be aware of the full range of implements available for walk-behinds,” continues Maitland. “We see the BCS tractor as a complete, four-season tractor for any farm or homestead – just a bit smaller than one you may be used to.”
