Making Grain Hopper Doors Safer
“The TED is all about safety,” says Glen Hart of Little Rock, Ark. “Most guys use a high-torque drill to open a hopper. When it’s full of grain it takes a lot of torque which stresses the drill.
He says in high-torque situations when a door comes to a sudden stop, something usually gives, and it’s almost always the person holding the drill. Hart’s TED devices are designed to eliminate the problem.
The TED has an adjustable vertical bar that stretches to the ground with horizontal bars that stretch out from either side at the bottom which helps eliminate torque.
“When you’re opening or closing a door, if there’s any point where something needs to stop, your weight on the base legs keeps torque from getting generated back at the operator’s arms.”
A special grain coupler attaches to the hopper door shaft and easily closes or opens hopper doors.
“We’re getting good feedback on this so far,” he says. “Farmers like the portability of this thing as well as the safety. It’s also good for folks like me who’ve gotten older and don’t want to risk getting injured.”
Hart says one of the best things about the TED device is that it’s flexible. There are a lot of different types of grain trailers available these days.
“Farmers don’t want to put something on each trailer to make opening those hopper doors more efficient,” he says. “This is portable and works with different trailers.”
The base TED unit retails for $50. There are a variety of extras available on the website, including complete grain drill kits, base drill kits, battery chargers, tool bags and more. The total cost can exceed $300 depending on the number of extras you want.
