Historic San Diego Zoo Farmall Cub
Ruby Valen of Camp Verde, Ariz., has possession of a one-of-a-kind Farmall Cub. “It was specially made for the San Diego Zoo,” he says. “Because of its sloped and hilly terrain, they solicited the Farmall company to build them a specialized maintenance tractor.”
Farmall delivered a modified 1953 Cub. Valen explains, “They redid the front end to bring the tractor down to a mere 36 in. height, then widened the rear wheels and added special brackets, belts, and pulleys to take the power from the pto over the rear axle. Under the tractor is a hydraulic 4-ft. sickle bar operated by a drive shaft and more brackets, belts and pulleys.” Likewise, wheel weights were added on all four wheels, and a unique gear shift was added to operate a 2-speed differential inside the rear axle.
Now, Valen is looking to pass on his piece of history. “The engine has been professionally rebuilt (new pistons, etc.), and the tractor has been fully restored,” he says. “I’m 93 years old and have gone through two heart attacks. I think it’s time to find a new owner.”
