New Robot Monitors And Mows Fences
![]() |
The battery-powered SmartFence robot is being developed at the University of Kassel, which was founded in 1971 and is located in central Germany. The university has about 25,000 students.
It uses a 3D camera to identify the stakes and wire. Then, it analyzes the fence and cuts any growth below.
The trimmer swings back out of the way when it encounters a post. Using camera guidance, it maneuvers along curves and hills and detects leaning posts and sagging or broken wires.
In the future, researchers hope to measure the voltage in the wire and identify any points where it’s grounding out. The unit determines the type and position of malfunctions and informs the user via communication with a server.
Commercial versions are being developed in collaboration with the German electric fencing firm Horizont (www.horizont.com) and should be available in the next few years.
