Gray Box Timer Cuts Water Heating Bills 30%
You don't keep your oven on all day because you expect to make a pie before dinner. So, why should you leave your hot water heater on all day to wash dishes at night?
That's a logical question, but it was something you couldn't do much about ù until now. Thanks to a new automatic timer, your electric water heater heats water only when you need it, allowing you to cut heating costs up to 30%.
The timer, made by Intermatic, Inc., Spring Grove, Ill., is called the "Little Gray Box".
Surveys of users in Florida and Illinois gave some impressive figures. Five Florida families averaged $90 annual savings with electricity rates of 4.8ó per kilowatt hour. Five Illinois families saved an average of $120 per year at an electricity cost of 4.8ó.
Thus, in 6 months or less, the timer, which sells for under $50, paid for itself. It is available for a 125V or 250V system.
Three sets of trippers can be set to turn the heater on at times you need hot water, or when rates are lower at off-peak times. A manual override switch gives you the convenience of turning on for more hot water for unexpected guests, large washing loads, etc.
