Shank Extenders Wipe Out Tire Tracks
"You don't have to run the whole cultivator deeper just to dig up tire tracks," says Don Van Houweling, Van-Wall Equipment, manufacturer of new shank extenders for field cultivators that let you extend cultivator shanks 2-in. directly behind the tractor wheels so that they run the same depth below ground as the rest of the shanks."Extenders" are made from the same grade high-carbon forged tool steel which is used in the best shanks. The curvature of the Extenders matches the shanks they're fitted to so the sweeps run at the correct pitch. This varies from cultivator to cultivator so you have to buy the correct Extender refit kit for your particular cultivator.
Because the Extender lets you operate at just the depth needed for good cultivation, Van Houweling says it reduces draft load, increasing field speed and productivity. "This helps reduce fuel consumed, and reduces wear and tear on equipment," he notes.
The Extender comes in a kit with 16 shank extenders and hardware needed to attach them. Units are specially designed to bolt tightly so shovels cannot work loose. The kit sells for $49.95.
