Look What they're Doing With ATV'S ATV'S ATV'S 8-6-8 First on the market with the "first ever" 4-wheel drive ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) is Adventure Vehicles, of Monroe, La. Called the Honcho, it's chain driven with a differential at the front. "Full time" power to all four wheels is provided by a 305 cc, single cylinder, four-stroke Kohler engine. It comes with 26x12x12 corded tires, electric start, reverse gear, four wheel braking, parking brake, front and rear cargo racks, and automatic variable speed drive clutches. It's American built and measures 72 in. long, 46 in. wide and 43 in. high. "We think it will have special appeal to farmers and ranchers. It'll go anywhere you want to take it," says Don Brant, president of Adventure Vehicles. Retail price is right at $2,495, which means you can now get 4-wheel drive, with reverse and electric start, for not much more than you'd have to pay for the competition's best two wheel drive four or three wheelers. "My wife and I think the 3-wheeler has gone from being an over-priced toy to the single most useful machine on the ranch," says John Ray who farms near John Day, Oreg. He built a trailer for his 3-wheelers from an old snowmobile trailer by replacing the skis with wheels. "We can haul up to 200 lbs. of salt blocks in it or toss in a couple hay bales. We chase cows with our 3-wheelers, haul feed supplements, fencing materials, and we use them to check fields. They burn less gas than a pickup and are faster than a horse. This trailer lets us get more use out of them and it's fun for the kids to ride in too," says John. A new "long arm" steering rod developed by a New Zealand firm lets you control your 3-wheeler while standing in a trailer towed by the machine, helping feed livestock, pick up portable fencing, and perform dozens of other chores. The telescoping steering arm controls both steering and the throttle, letting you stop and start the bike by remote control. The arm pivots on a lightweight metal frame that fastens to the carrying rack. It fastens quickly to the controls on the bike and is made of steel with plastic-coated working parts. Universal ATV blade plows for moving snow or dirt are available through dealers from Bell Industries. The 48 in. tilt blade, made of 11 ga. steel, has a replaceable wear bar. Mounting bracket can be left on ATV when blade is removed. Blade lifts easily with hand-operated lever.
