Auger Stopper Minds Itself
"When our farm help left for college, we needed a way to speed up grain hauling," says farmer-inventor Dewain J. Moore, East Lynn, Ill., who came up with an automatic shut-off that attaches to unloading augers and shuts off the powering tractor when grain flow from an unloading wagon stops.
"It lets you leave the tractor and wagon at the auger and return to the field with a second tractor and wagon before the combine's full again. My wife operates our combine and I unload the corn," says Moore.
The Auger Stopper fits quickly to the auger with a couple wrap-around clamps. Wiring runs from a "flipper" switch on the unit to the powering tractor (or electric auger motor). When grain flow stops, the flipper switch grounds out the tractor motor. It'll also work on diesel tractors with electric fuel shut-off. A time-delay on the attachment can be set to allow the auger to empty out completely after grain stops flowing.
"One side benefit is that because you are not in a hurry waiting for the auger to empty out, the tractor can be run at a moderate speed for less wear and tear on equipment. Also, the Auger Stopper acts as an emergency shutoff since if the operator pulls on the electric cord it will shut down in an emergency," says Moore.
Auger Stopper sells for $249.
