Conveyor Speeds Silo Filling
"It does everything a stationary conveyor box will do, yet sells for only about 1/3 as much," says Randy Bauer, Mina, S. Dak., inventor-manufacturer of the new KIS (stands for "keep it simple") conveyor box for high-speed loading of all types of forages or grain into upright silos. "We think it's the fastest, most economical and trouble free way of filling upright storage."
For handling forages with a truck, for example, the driver simply dumps each load on the concrete apron, then heads right back to the field to get another load. The forage is then pushed into the KIS conveyor with a tractor or skid steer loader.
A concrete apron approximately 18 ft. wide by 30 ft. long is recommended, with a conveyor set in a recessed chase at one end. When the conveyor is removed from the chase, the chase can be covered with a steel deck or bridge planking.
For unloading grain, the recessed chase is covered with bridge planking so the truck can be driven over. The planking is then removed and grain allowed to drop directly into the conveyor. Or, grain can be dumped in a pile on the platform to free the truck, then pushed into the conveyor with a dozer blade. Plans for the platform, chase position and covering are furnished with each unit.
"The unique thing about this system is that it allows the truck to return to the field as soon as the box can raise, dump and come back down. There is no waiting for silage to be pulled away from the truck, as with more expensive stationary conveyor boxes. In many instances, this time savings has eliminated the need for a second truck," explains Bauer. "We have had users tell us that, in switching from silage side unloading wagons to the conveyor, they were able to feed the silo blower faster and more evenly. They have also eliminated most plugging problems at the blower."
In grain or forage, the conveyor will match any model silo blower's capacity, notes Bauer. It's powered by a hydraulic orbit motor, plugged into the blower tractor's hydraulic system. Simply by moving a short lever, delivery of the conveyor's output into the blower is variable. The portable conveyor is easily moved from silo to silo with a skid steer loader, or with a tractor loader and chain.
The conveyor retails for $2,195, FOB. It comes complete and ready for use, except for the optional hydraulic hose ends that plug into the blower tractor.
