Low Cost Highway Snowplows
Howard Anderson, Plum City, Wis., and his father Lyle, built a special hitch to front-mount two used highway maintenance snowplows on their Allis-Chalmers 8010 and 8030 4-WD tractors.
"They've got more snow-moving capacity than any snowplow I've ever seen for farm tractors," says Anderson.
The 4-ft. high V-plow cuts an 8-ft. wide path and the 3-ft. high side plow cuts a 10-ft. wide path. Both plows use the same hitch. "The 8010 has 120 hp and the 8030 has 140 hp. That horsepower coupled with front wheel drive makes the tractors ideal for plowing snow," says Anderson. "I bought both plows from a used road main teance equipment dealer for less than $200. Comparable new commercial plows would have cost $4,000 to $5,000."
The frame-mounted hitch Anderson built for the snowplows fastens to each plow with seven bolts. Several more bolts fasten the frame to the tractor. A hydraulic cylinder, mounted just behind the snow-plow, raises and lowers the plow.
