Super Torch Cuts Through Rock, Cement
"It runs at twice the temperature of an oxyacetylene torch," says inventor and manufacturer Eric Wolfe, noting that the amazing new torch has been shown in several recent Hollywood movies like Mission Impossible.
All that is needed to bore through virtually any material is the handheld Magmafusion torch, an oxygen tank, a supply of Magmafusion tubes, and an electric spark. The 10,000-degree particle stream that is emitted from the end of the tubes literally vaporizes anything you want to cut.
Magmafusion tubes contain a solid fuel source, which will continue to burn as long as oxygen flows through it. The more oxygen, the faster the tube burns and the more powerful the particle stream.
"This torch will burn through 4 inches of steel in 4 seconds," says Marcia Wolfe. "Our customers range from fire and rescue to underwater salvage, mining, farming and demolition. Lots of contractors use it. It's handy for rebar and beam work."
Unlike air-carbon arc welders and oxyacetylene, the Magmatorch produces no carbon contamination or temper loss and cuts through multiple layers of a laminated surface. No surface preparation to remove rust, scale, paint or slag is needed. It simply burns through them all.
"It is faster, more powerful and more versatile than anything on the market," says Eric Wolfe. "It has even been used to punch holes in permafrost so a backhoe can dig out for a grave."
One thing that makes the tool especially versatile is that the tubes are bendable. If a hole needs to be drilled in a hard-to-reach spot or a cut needs to be made behind an obstruction, the Magmafusion tube is bent to achieve the proper angle.
The Magmafusion torch can even be used to fracture large rocks. Once a bore has been made into the rock with the torch, water is poured in and the thermal shock breaks it into fragments.
The only thing the super torch won't do is heat metal so it can be bent. That also means that it does not warp materials as it bores, slices and gouges. A rod extender allows the torch to be used with maximum operator safety if working around unstable equipment.
Even faster cutting is now available with the MAGarc 38, 3/8-in. by 18-in. rods designed to be used with a 225 amp welder. The combined technologies slice through a linear foot of 1 1/2-in. steel plate in 40 seconds and use only an inch of rod. The MAGarc 12 (1/2-in. by 18-in. rod) makes the same cut in 20 seconds and consumes only 1/2 in. of rod.
"The MAGarc rods give you a poor man's plasma torch using your existing cutter," says Wolfe. "They are designed for long term use, primarily for scrap disassembly and salvage."
The MAG 4000 ships with 50 Magmafusion tubes for $685 while the MAG 6000 with 150 Magmafusion tubes sells for $1,220 (prices include delivery).
