Chimney Top Damper Locks In Heat FARM HOME Building Techniques 29-1-31 "It stops 99 percent of heat loss up the chimney," says Russ Dimmitt of HomeSaver about the company's "Lock Top" chimney damper that fits over the top of the chimney and opens and closes via a spring-loaded cable.
Besides saving energy, it also keeps the critters out. Dimmitt says raccoons especially love to have their babies inside chimneys, just above the firebox.
"We make 8 standard sizes that will fit about 95 percent of the chimneys out there," he says.
Sells for between $200 and $400 which may include installation. The company also makes a flapper-type damper that does the same thing.
