Device Blocks Mice With Sound
You can keep mice out of cars, trucks and farm equipment with the low volume, jackhammer-like sound of Mouse Blocker. Installed under the hood, the mini sound system creates an audio barrier to rodents.
"We've found that 95 percent of mouse incursions happen via the engine compartment," says Matthew Swift, Mouse Blocker. "When the rodent comes in under the hood, they hear the jackhammer-like sound and won't venture further."
Swift got the idea while in a 30-year career in service departments at car dealerships. Damage from mice was a common problem. When brought to the owner's attention, it would create a plea for a solution.
"No one had the answer," says Swift. "People try dryer sheets or mothballs, but they have to be replaced. Who wants to put mothballs in a new Mercedes?"
Swift went to work on the problem and came up with an 85-decibel, 12-volt system. He recognized that it had to be stable in a variety of weather conditions. The sound, while noticeable when in the area, is not bothersome, even when the volume is dialed up, says Swift.
"We have different systems based on how long a vehicle will sit unused and how much power it draws," says Swift. "The Classic version takes very little power and will run for months without drawing down the battery."
The Mouse Blocker Pro has 3 levels of ultrasonic frequencies producing 80, 90 or 105 decibels. It also has a dual strobing white LED light to further deter mice.
"Rodents see the light as movement," says Swift. "It can be switched off if desired."
A sensor on the Pro monitors battery power and shuts it down if battery power drops below 11 volts. That can take as little as 2 weeks, notes Swift. If the vehicle is going to be left for longer periods, the Pro is also available as a plug-in model.
"If needed for long-term storage, we recommend the Classic or the plug-in model," says Swift.
Customer reviews on Amazon indicate general satisfaction, with nearly 70 percent of 52 reviews giving it at least four stars.
The Mouse Blocker Classic is priced at $59.95. The Pro is priced at $89.95, and the plug-in Mouse Blocker Pro is priced at $99.95.
